VARIATIONS

Consult your owner's manual to determine the requirements of a tune-up for your particular vehicle. The scope of tune-ups as performed by automotive service centers can vary greatly. Be certain to understand exactly what is included in the tune-up you are getting. It may be more or less than you need. A complete tune-up generally includes the following:

  1. New distributor cap
  2. New rotor
  3. New spark plugs
  4. New air cleaner filter
  5. New fuel filter(s)
  6. New PCV valve
  7. New crankcase filter
  8. New breaker points and condenser
  9. Adjust ignition timing
  10. Adjust carburetor idle and choke
  11. Adjust valve lash (on mechanical lifters)

Note that some of the work done in a tune-up is relatively simple to do. If you utilize a professional automotive technician, consider having him or her focus on the more difficult things like the last four items.
